Bastille Day
Caen, France

July 14, 2002

This is the view from our hotel room. We were woken up early by the hotel desk telling us that we had to move our car out of the parking in front because there was going to be a parade. Move or be towed.

What is so funny about this trip is, when we planned it we forgot about Bastille Day. It was until the day before that Gary remembered. The night before there were fireworks everywhere. Here is the square below our hotel window as it started filling up.

Here the are setting up.

Now lined up.

There was a band and soldiers and firemen and policemen. It was quite noisy.

Two videos of Bastille Day.
Both videos are 4.3MB.

Video 1 - sideways (because I can't figure out how to rotate it)

Video 2
Both videos were shot out of our hotel window.

You will need quicktime to view these. If you don't have quicktime it can be downloaded at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

After seeing the parade in the morning, we had to start driving east because our ferry left that afternoon from Dieppe, France to Newhaven, England. This is a bridge that we passed over. It was huge.

Here is a wide angle of the bridge. We actually took this from a walking path that was on a bridge over the road. We had stopped to eat at something like a truck stop. They were out of pizza.

I had Gary pull over here so i could take a picture of the fields.

Here is Gary turning around so we can get back on the main road and drive around the coast to get to our ferry.

Here we are in Dieppe. I kept calling it Dippy. We were waiting for the ferry to load. We rode on Hoverspeed Ferries.

Here is our car in Dieppe. It is a Picasso, Citroen.

Time to load the ferry. It was about a 2 hour ferry ride from Dippe, France to Newhaven, England across the Channel.

Here we are on the ferry. Well you can't see us, but we were there trying to not get blown off the ferry. It was extremely windy.
