Cathedral at Elgin

August 19, 2002

Once reguarded as the most beautiful of Scottish churches the cathedral was looted and burned by the Wolf of Badenoch at the end of the 14th century.

As if that wasn't enough, the cathedral was further tormented by fire, Edward III, the Reformation and Cromwell's bullets.

The cathedral is being restored to preserve it from further damage. Ironically acid rain in part from the distilleries is eating away at the limestone.

Very few sculptures remain within the cathedral.

Here is an overview of most of the cathedral from one of the upper towers.

A few tombs still remain here. Many are still in what was the floor.

This would have been the front of the church with stain glass windows.

The ceiling of one of the few still standing rooms. It was round and housed a few tombs.
